The main characters in The Buddha of Suburbia

Haroon, Karim's father
He is Indian. He looks like he loves his family, he is introduced as a good father at the beginning—he kisses his family when he comes back hoe after work, and he appears to be in a good mood. He may seem stressed, anxious because he practices yoga, maybe it is to be more relaxed. His practising yoga also shows Haroon is patient and calm. Haroon seems fascinated by the practice of yoga and he is hard-working. Yet Haroon is developing a love affair with Eva, he is unfaithful to his wife. (Camille) He is a humourous character, he is motor to the story. He is not a perfect example for his kids. (Yassine) Haroon seems to have his own philosophy of life, he teaches. He is a very proud character. He is attracted by Eva because she is happy, her life seems exciting. (…) His best friend is Anwar. (Billy)

Eva, Charlie's mother and Haroon's lover.
She is English. She organises Yoga sessions at her home, so we can guess that she is interested in this culture. She looks like she loves literature, reading because she advises some books as 'Candide' to karim. She is open-minded. Even if she knows Haroon has a wife, she has an affair with him. She is at the origin of Margaret and Haroon's separation. (Camille) Her husband used to beat her. ( Laura)

 Changez, Jamila 's husband
He represents the typical image of an Indian immigrant who moves to England. He thinks his life will be better in England. ( Laura) He is lazy and curious. His marriage with Jamila has been arranged by their families. Anwar wants him to work at the store. He is Indian and when he arrives in England he doesn't know Jamila. He soon becomes friends with Karim. (Camille) Although he loves his wife, and they live together, his love is not reciprocal, and he ends up being unfaithful to Jamila with a prostitute. Finally Anwar doesn't like Changez because he doesn't work hard at the store ( he sleeps there). ( Billy)

Karim Amir, the narrator of the book, Haroon and Margaret's son.
He searches himself, he doesn't know if he is gay or heterosexual, he appears to be bisexual. ( Yassine)

Margaret, Karim and Allie's mother and Haroon's wife.
She is shy and reserved. She helps her son, Allie. She works, does the housework, works int he kitchen. She is not a main character. (Yassine)

 Allie, Karim's little brother.
He is effeminate, we may think that he is homosexual but at the end of the book he has a girlfriend. (Yassine)

Jamila, Anwar and Jeeta's daughter, Changez's wife.
She is a feminist, and she likes defending her idea. She didn't want to marry Cahngez, but she agreed to do it after her father had blackmailed her ( she had to marry Changez or he would starve to death). She has sex with Karim but refuses to have sex with Changez. ( Billy) She is Karim's best friend. She talks about her problems with Karim. ( Laura) She is very clever she likes learning new things, she often goes to the library where she meets Miss Cutmore. ( ...)
